Summary

Ramsdens is a growing and profitable AIM-listed company. It is a diversified, financial services provider and retailer, operating in the four core business segments of foreign currency exchangepawnbroking loans, precious metals buying and selling and retailing of second hand and new jewellery. Headquartered in Middlesbrough, and from roots that can be traced back to the 1970s, the Group operates from over 150 stores spread throughout the UK (including three franchised stores) and has a growing online presence. The trading entity is FCA authorised for its pawnbroking activities.

Role specification

As part of a succession plan, the Board of Ramsdens seek to appoint a new Non-Executive Director who will be expected to enhance the Board’s collective skills, expertise, mindsets, experience and knowledge.

The successful candidate will be able to participate in a constructive and collegiate way while also bringing new ideas and perspectives to Board discussions and contribute to the strategic direction of the Company.  

Key responsibilities of a Non-Executive Director include:

  • Contributing towards the Board’s responsibility to serve the interests of all stakeholders and bringing independent judgement to issues of corporate performance, resourcing, and regulatory compliance
  • Contributing to strategy formulation for business growth, response to the challenges of being environmentally aware, developing the Group’s social position and ensuring best practice corporate governance by the Company generally

Person specification

The Board is open to those seeking their first Non-Executive Director role. 

This individual will bring a commercial leadership background from within a fast-moving consumer services / retail business in the UK with experience in successful multi-channel development. Candidates will ideally bring experience leading, or overseeing, the digital marketing and e-commerce strategy and will also bring an understanding of brand management in a mature and stable business. Experience of working within a UK-listed business, and therefore bringing an understanding of the governance processes which this entails, is desirable.

Whilst prior financial services is not required, candidates should be able to demonstrate awareness of the issues involved in a regulated environment. The Board is keen to bring diversity of experience to the board and best practice learnings from sectors ideally outside of their own, including (but not limited to) retail, leisure, hospitality or travel.

This individual will be able to work effectively with the IT leaders within the business and provide constructive challenge to the IT agenda (systems, cyber security etc) to ensure that its growth in this space is secure and sustainable.

Commitment and requirements

This role is remunerated, and reasonable, pre-agreed travel expenses will be reimbursed. The total time commitment for the Non-Executive Director role is approximately 20 days per year including preparation time, travel and ad hoc engagement. The Board holds scheduled monthly board scheduled meetings at least 10 times per year plus a strategy day. All meetings will be held in Middlesbrough.  

Requirements:

  • Multi-channel retail / consumer services commercial leadership Experience in a commercial leadership role within a fast-moving retail / consumer services business in the UK, specifically in successful multi-channel development. Candidates will be able to demonstrate experience of leading, or overseeing, a digital marketing and e-commerce strategy.

Logistics

Remuneration: £40,000 per year

 

Time commitment: c. 20 days per year

 

Location: UK – North England (Middlesbrough)
