Background

Molendotech spun out of the University of Plymouth in 2018 from the research of Professor Simon Jackson, founder and CSO on novel technology for a sustainable environment and health. Having developed rapid assays the company has just launched its first product BacterisK+ which is being commercialised and supporting water utilities to track pollution and support decision making (currently a hot topic). 

The Role

With both technical and commercial momentum, Molendotech now wants to hire a fractional CFO to help the organisation expand in the water market and potentially enter into other markets such as healthcare, while preparing for a possible acquisition from suppliers. This will involve working alongside the CEO & leadership team to understand the business strategy, plans, opportunities and threats, then provide financial guidance, along with all financial support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own finance and management information, with the right information going to the right managers in order to optimise decision-making.
  • Manage company data, insights and KPIs – from data strategy to data gathering, plus organising and generating insights for board review. 
  • Identifying and quantifying opportunities and risks, then taking tangible actions to support the former and mitigate the latter.
  • Drive efficiency and frugality throughout the business, including with suppliers, e.g. outsourced manufacturers.
  • Recruit and retain a world-class finance team.
  • Design & manage stock option plan.
  • Support a potential fundraise if profitability doesn’t come fast enough.

Requirements

Essential:

  • Smart and hungry with impressive financial qualifications or background
  • Significant experience in a fast-paced startup/ scaleup environment.
  • Demonstrable track record of building financial systems from scratch and turning data into actionable insights.
  • Understanding of stock and equity pools.
  • Industry-specific degree and/or experience - particularly in selling to utilities or other bureaucratic industries. 
  • Fundraising experience.
  • High EQ.
  • High IQ.

Desirable:

  • 10+ years experience with 4+ years experience leading a finance team in a complex mid-sized business.
  • Experience as a COO or in a senior Operations role.
  • Successful track record as a fractional consultant/portfolio professional.
  • Qualified accountant, MBA or other professional qualification.
  • Significant experience in a fast-paced startup/ scaleup environment.

Time Requirement

This is estimated to require one day per week, though that might trend up as the company gains momentum.

Location

This is a hybrid role with some travel required to Cambridge for face-to-face meetings with the team. 

Remuneration

Remuneration will depend on your experience, but is likely to be £750-1,000 per day. If this becomes a long-term commitment, stock options and bonuses are also possible on top of this.
