I love this! I have built three businesses and every single one of them has been incredibly fun & exciting. I’m glad to hear you are destigmatising the idea that building a business is boring & taxing!!
I was wondering if anyone in here works for the art sector, like galleries, museums or art institutions? If so, I’d love to ask some questions for a market research I am doing.
Hi Valeria, My daughter is an artist and also works at the Ashmolean museum in Oxford – you can contact her via a message to me if this will help. Thanks, Andrew
Do you have experience in institutional sales for a hedge fund, quant fund, or any investment manager in the alternatives/private markets/illiquids universe?
Or know anyone that does?
If so, I’d love to speak to you/them – please message me!
Thank you Charlotte! I got tons of good learning. Sharing a few:
1) Get your outline and structure super clear and avoid as much as possible to keep changing it, to avoid troubles with your editor
2) Even if you use LLMs to help you out with writing, you will still need to account for hundred of hours in creating content, researching, re-structuring, reviewing, and editing multiple times, over and over; forget almost one entire year of weekends (tell the family what will change)
Congratulations on an ENORMOUS achievement. Conceiving, writing, editing, producing and publishing is a huge undertaking. I’ve self-published two books so I can empathise with the blood, sweat, tears, love and VISION that goes into it. I published paperback/ kindle via KDP, and Smashwords for all other e-readers. I’m sure the options have change a lot since 2013/ 2015 so I’ll be sure to read your medium article. Do you plan to publish for e-readers to make it more accessible?
Hi Colin! Happy to help with this if needed – I have built websites for this very purpose, for several companies and individuals, using WordPress or similar.
It’s been a while since I’ve posted here, but I’m excited to reconnect and share something close to my heart.
As portfolio professionals, many of us know the unique, and sometimes lonely, journey of navigating solo work. That experience inspired me to create Unfiltered Solopreneur, a podcast dedicated to sharing the raw, real stories of solopreneurs, who’ve traded corporate security for the adventure of building something from scratch.
I’m thrilled to announce that Episode 7 drops this Thursday, featuring Launi, founder of Creative Play, who went from designing for Disney to crafting her own entrepreneurial adventure.
I hope you’ll give it a listen. My goal is to inspire, connect, and remind us all that we’re not alone in this journey. New episodes drop every Thursday!
Available on YouTube. Find us on Apple, Spotify and Amazon Music by searching ’Unfiltered Solopreneur’
Our networking event is back! This Friday – 1-2pm. Some of you have already got this pencilled in, but make sure you sign up to get the link to join us!
For those of you who haven’t come along before, this is a fast, fun hour of speed networking. You really never know who you’ll meet! In this safe space, step out of your comfort zone and connect with a community of portfolio professionals on the same journey as you.
I’m developing a new service offer – a Legal Health Check – and so, to test and get feedback on the offering, I’m offering free Legal Health Checks for the next couple of months.
It’s a 1:1 strategy session to dive into all things legal, followed by a short, actionable report setting out gaps and areas of improvement ranked by importance and urgency.
If you or any of your contacts would benefit from a Legal Health Check, please feel free to connect.
It’ll only be free for a couple of months while we refine the offering and then it’ll be charged at around £2,500 plus VAT.
What a fab offer, thanks for sharing Alexandra! I’m assuming this check would be applicable to freelancers/fractional workers? I’ll keep you in mind and point folks in your direction
Thanks Charlotte And yes, absolutely open to freelancers/fractional workers – we’ll talk about things like your customer agreements, structuring, intellectual property, engaging suppliers/subcontractors, etc.
Hi Holly, I’m certainly happy to have a chat and see if i can answer your questions – if I can’t, I’ll be able to point you to someone who can. Drop me an email at [email protected] and we can find a time for a call.
This year hasn’t gone quite as I’d hoped, and I am still early on my journey to figure out what is next. Nevertheless, I thought I would share this. Several months ago, on a Zoom call, Ben Legg suggested I think about the synergy between my science fiction writing and my ”day job” building software. I’m doing a talk next week at Women of Silicon Roundabout on futures thinking, which has evolved out of this thinking.
As we spoke about a lot on the Catapult calls, portfolio careers are ever evolving and sometimes that evolution can be slow – putting in the ground work now will be hugely helpful in ensuring you are moving in the right direction for you. Enjoy this exploratory phase where you can!
Keep us updated with how the talk goes – we’d love to see a link if it is recorded
Amazing work Jule! Keep up the great work!! So gutted I missed this! As an author myself, I know how much of a rollercoaster writing can be! I really leaned into building a separate business to sustain my lifestyle and give me my time back so that I could write. I’d love to connect with you and pick your brain on how you managed to get around the rollercoaster! x
Hi all – update from me. The talk went really really well. People seemed to react very well to it, and I ended up having a queue of people to speak to me at the end and got a lot of great contacts.
It’s really given me a boost, so thanks for the support here.
Our Community Networking sessions are always so uplifting and interesting – we come away with a new perspective on the wonderful people we have in our tribe and ideas for how we can better meet the needs of our people.
We’d love to hear about some of the people you met or the topics you covered in your breakout rooms, so do share below ✨
Over the last 18 months or so, I’ve been volunteering on a project to help tackle poverty. And the report of our findings & recommendations is now out (see attached).
As a workers and workplaces resilience specialist, I’m also keenly interested in community resilience. And clearly, poverty undermines that in several ways, as it’s typically accompanied by other major issues we all pay a high price trying to recover our equilibrium from.
Our report outlines our recommendations to make some key service improvements that can help keep folks’ heads above water when they’re in financial straits.
I felt we could also make some proposals further upstream & so I wrote down some ideas to help us locally move towards eliminating not just tackling poverty (to protect folk from falling in the river of financial hardship in the first place).
For whatever reason, the project facilitators decided to includ…
Thanks for sharing, Rob – really interesting report and kudos for having your additional suggestions added verbatim!
‘Business, financial and leadership coaching and advice for small-business entrepreneurs.’ Is so critical in helping individuals get their ventures off the ground and something I’m sure many of our community members could help with
My name is Holly, and my philosophy is to live first and work second. Having said that, I am also ”semi-retired”, on track to smash my alarm clock on my 25th birthday!! I’m so excited!
I’m looking to connect with other people who are trying to escape the doom that is 9-5 until you die! Any other big dreamers out there?
So great to have you join Holly. I loved our chat the other day and look forward to more chats in the future. Let me know if I or the team can help with anything on here!
I have a distinct memory of sitting in the office I was working from in 2018 thinking, ’why do I spend so much of my time here?’ It suddenly seemed totally ludicrous to me, so that evening I submitted my condensed hours request and made the effort to use my extra time off to do things I enjoyed and were meaningful to me.
I’ve not gone back to the 9-5 approach since then – I can’t believe it took me until my late 20s to realise that flexibility was so important t…

In order to get integrated with the collective I’d definitely suggest coming along to our monthly online Community Networking – a fun and fast approach to networking, this is great to way to meet fellow community members and learn thing or two
I’ve been a member of TPC for a couple of months now, and today I’m thrilled to share that I’ve secured my second paying assignment/job! I can officially call myself a Portfolioist—not just part-time for one company anymore.
It was fantastic meeting some of you at the TPC Festival. The event was incredibly informative and a lot of fun.
A bit about me: I’ve been an entrepreneur for over 20 years and recently branded myself as a Fractional Sales & Marketing Director. I help scaling companies and startups achieve growth through strategic sales, marketing, and business development—this is where my true skills and passion lie. I’m looking forward to connecting with more of you over the coming months.
If you’re still reading, here’s my favourite moment of the week: I met one of the TPC community members in a café yesterday for coffee. During our chat, he mentioned “the CEO of HP,” and for some reason, I respon…
Massive well done on the new addition to your portfolio career – are you able to share who you’re working with?
I had a lovely chat with Mark Tupper earlier this week (profile incoming!) who asked whether there was a call for sales skills in the fractional world – thank you for providing a real life example that there is!
I’m currently working with two very different companies: a 30-year-old manufacturing business that hasn’t had a meaningful sales or marketing strategy in place, and a younger company in their second year, specialising in personalised LinkedIn outreach.
For the younger company, I’m helping refine their product offering before moving on to sales, marketing, and delivery. With the manufacturing business, the focus is on developing a strategic approach to sales and marketing rather than jus…
Love to see this Danny and great to have you come along to the festival! Welcome to your portfolio career and the tribe that will help you make it successful 🙏🏼
I love this! I have built three businesses and every single one of them has been incredibly fun & exciting. I’m glad to hear you are destigmatising the idea that building a business is boring & taxing!!
