I have analysed, worked for and/or invested in technology, media and telecoms companies for 30 years, ranging from the earliest stage startups to the largest companies in the world. One theme has sustained throughout: the most successful companies are those in which the mission is clearly defined and the milestones to get there well articulated. My goal is to work help founders craft their story for partners, colleagues and investors.
What I offer
Fundraising evaluation
Are you wondering when to raise capital? How much to raise? Should you raise from friends and family, angels, or institutional investors? How should you think about valuation? I have invested in each of those stages and can help you think through the pros and cons of all of them.
Having followed some of the world’s largest entities from their days as private companies to the crosshairs of anti-monopolistic regulators, I can impart some of the key decisions and strategies that got them there,
Great companies are defined by their mission, driven by a clear strategic direction, and highly deliberate in how they measure progress. Having presented to boards and sat on them myself, I can help you think through how to articulate your objectives, your plan of attack and your accountability.
As you look to raise outside capital, creating ambitious but realistic forecasts will be an important component of the process. Having built forecasts for a publicly-traded company and vetted plans for start-ups/innovators routinely, I can help you arrive at plans that makes sense for all parties.
As a public market investor, I meet with management teams to assess their strategic considerations, competitive tensions, capital allocation decisions, fundraising requirements or internal dynamics, all rolling up into long term forecasts which I use to ascribe a valuation.
I meet with perhaps one hundred companies per year, deciding whether or not to invest in their businesses. I have evaluated companies ranging from the earliest start ups to those that are close to self-funding. I have gained perspective on how investors gauge risk/reward at each stage.
As President of the Foundation Board for a network of charter schools in Massachusetts, I advise the CEO on significant strategic initiatives. I also work closely with the development team across the organization's fundraising efforts.
