Last October, I started a new job, as a Heritage Officer, with the Lowestoft Town Hall Project.
I moved from West Yorkshire, five and half hours away, to the furthest east you can go, in the UK.
My roots are in Sheringham, Norfolk, which like its Suffolk cousin, Lowestoft, is on the east coast of England.
I’ve been fascinated by Norfolk and Suffolk for a long time.
So it’s great to be finally living in this part of the world.
My job is a trainee role, and the learning is tough. I doubt myself constantly. People in the office don’t always get me, are dismissive and sceptical about my role and my ability to do it.
But I’m running an exhibition, from a popup shop in the High Street, promoting the Town Hall Project. So now it feels like I’m doing something real, and my job feels worthwhile, in talking to members of the public.
My role involves working with museums, local heritage organisations and community groups.
I’m wor…

Sorry, I couldn’t directly reply to your later comment. Thanks, that would be great, if I could draft something, to put by you, if possible?
Although as things gradually develop, and I make new contacts in the town and nearby, I’m beginning to spend at least some time out of the office.
In April, I’ll have my 6 month review. So maybe that’s the time to talk about working outside of the office. Other workmates in the office could say the same thing, though! But the…

Absolutely – share anything you’ve got and I’d be happy to have a read! I’ll drop you a link to my Calendly also so that if you fancy a chat you know how to reach me

Sounds like a great role John Chamberlain. I find if you just keep focusing on making a positive difference, and sharing some of the early wins, then one-by-one people ‘get it’ and are won over.

It’s definitely the dream role- pulling together my previous experience. And building something new.
Being out of the office recently, and making new connections- has definitely fostered new ideas, and potential projects. It’s how to tactfully talk to my managers, about having much less time at the office, sat in front of a computer. And how to build my role, more in the right direction

Welcome to sunny Suffolk, John! I’m very sorry to hear some colleagues aren’t giving you the support a new hire needs.
Not enough of us understand the importance of culture, or the need to protect & promote it. Your work is vital – especially in a challenging town like yours. So I reckon you’re swimming against a tide of ignorance about the importance of culture & heritage in place-making, as well as a gnawing lack of civic pride in the town.
Which is why I susp…

Thanks Rob. I see you’re in Ipswich! It’s definitely challenging, and I’m feeling that more. I suppose I can only go back to basics, and focus on the to do list, completing training and projects.
I’m understanding more, that Lowestoft has been on a down, for a long time, and now it’s possibly on the cautious up.
I can only do so much, to be part of the up

True. I also need to find ways to be out of the office more. I’ve had a few days away, working from a popup shop. And having productive conversation with members of the public.
Not sure how to politely ask to change my role, so I’m in the office much less.

Happy Friday everyone! As part of my transition to a portfolio career, I’m really keen to meet founders of early-stage businesses (primarily in the consumer goods space across DTC and retail although open to other sectors) to understand a bit more about their operational headaches and growing pains.
Key areas of interest are supply chain optimisation, strategic planning, product development, cost improvements, AI & automation
If you know any founders or over-stretched Operations Teams that might be spending too much time firefighting or need help upgrading systems & processes related to the above, I’d really appreciate an introduction to learn more
Have a great weekend

Hi everyone, A bunch of ex-BP colleagues would like to organise a coaching/network event for BP colleagues who are about to be made redundant. We are looking to host this event at suitable location in West London.
A key part of making this a success is securing sponsors. I’m looking for innovative ideas on who to approach and what kind of sponsorship packages might be attractive.
If you have any experience with event sponsorship, or just general thoughts on who might be a good fit, I’d really value your input. ”Need to pick your brain” mode activated! Many thanks

James Bebbington is our man on the ground re. sponsorship – he may have some wisdom to impart!
Otherwise, community members who mention sponsorship in their profile as follows: Emma Bolger, Adam Thompson-Smith, Lerease Sweeney, Tariq El Haj Omar, David Weeks, Gul Mukhey, Hamish Dickie, Ben Flint

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, John – even the most optimistic person can feel the drag of negativity when it is coming from such close quarters. I think that some people just don’t understand the impact they have on their colleagues, which makes stuations like this tricky to combat.
When faced with any unwanted behaviour, I always revert to ’kill it with kindness’. Approaching people overflowing with positivity and friendliness seems to have a knock on…
